Do cavities hurt?

I am getting four cavities filled tomorrow, and i have never had any before. (When my 12-year-old molers grew in there was a flap of skin that irrated my tooth or something like that).

my friend says the only part that hurts is the shot, then everything else goes numb... but I can't stand needles, so I am getting laughing gas.

What is your opinion?

Do cavities hurt?
they push like a qtip thing with numbing stuff on it and then put the shot in the side of your mouth and the shot is so small all you can feel is a little bit of pressure when they do put the shot in, getting the cavity filled doesnt hurt you just can feel some pressure and when they get way down in there there it can be kinda of tendar while there working but it doesnt last long and just let them know if it hurts they will give you more novacaine
Reply:The laughing gas is really weird. It sort of feels like you are falling asleep, but your still awake. Hard to explain.... anyway, it doesn't hurt, you don't feel anything. It's like they're not even doing anything.
Reply:The only shot I've ever had that hurt was one in the roof of my mouth, which I only had when I had to get a brace put on my tooth that was at the top of my gumline growing into my nasal cavity, odd story. The best part was the surgeon, right before giving me that shot saying, "Now this is going to hurt alot." But, on top of that the worst I've ever had was when I wasn't numb yet and they started the operation..now that hurt. After one filling the pain was worse because they hadn't went down far enough too, but that's just because I apparently have icky surgeons haha.

But, on a brighter more optomistic note, when all was numb and well I couldn't feel a thing. All would go smoothly and it always made any previous pain go away. The shots would have been fine I think, but laughing gas should be ok too. Don't be nervous, that makes it worse. Good luck!
Reply:they can if you dont get em sealed
Reply:I've had laughing gas once.. And I can tell you straight out that I prefer the needles. What they do is put some numbing solution stuff (Technical term =P) on the gum, then they give you the needle. Close your eyes and you won't even realise.

The procedure doesn't hurt a bit. You may feel a little bit of pressure when drilling, but nothing seriously painful. The filling doesn't hurt either. Afterwards, your tooth will be numb, but it will clear up in about an hour.

Good Luck!
Reply:Although you are getting laughing gas they will still inject anesthetic, the gas just makes you more relaxed about what is going on. I would prefer not to have the gas and be in full control of the situation. The needles really do not hurt, first a plob of numbing gel is placed on the gum and left for atleast a minute and then when the needle is inserted you won't feel it. You may feel pressure or slight stining as it is injected but that's it.

Good Luck, Be Brave
