I have about 14 cavities and feel humiliated!!?

When I was 4-7 years old there was a dental office in my neighborhood that was run by a college. I was tortured from them and became very ill with hepatitis. I am now 30 years old with major dental problems. I dont do good with routine visits in fact I schedule appointments only to cancel them. I am afraid and terrified of the dentist. I actually now only believe in letting my teeth get so bad they have to pull them vs repairing them . I have a root canal that was never capped and is receding past the gum line, another broken tooth and not to mention cavities. I dont know what to do. My fear is causing me to not have regular dental visits or teeth cleaning. Any advice?

Yes, ask your doctor or dentist to prescribe a tranquilizer for you. That's what I do. I take one before every visit, even cleanings. If it's a major procedure, you can take more than one. Many people have a problem with anxiety at the dentist. You are not alone %26amp; you shouldn't feel bad about yourself. Best of luck!
Reply:make an appointment JUST TO TALK to a dentist, you don't have to have anything done....just talk to him. There are methods available now that make it painless and easy and he can tell you about all of them.
Reply:Valium works wonders on our apprehensive patients. Ask your dentist if this is a good option for you.
Reply:Find a good dentist. There's that 800 number or check online. Ask how they handle nervous patients, pain, etc. A good dentist will take the time to talk to you, explain things and will do their best to minimize your pain and discomfort. Please remember that your teeth are very important. Don't believe the denture adhesive ads - there are some things you can't eat with dentures. :-)

I'm rooting for you - give it another chance.
Reply:Find a dentist that specializes in conscious sedation. They can sedate you and do all work and cleanings.
