Stains or cavities???

How can you tell whether black discolouration in your teeth is due to cavities or if it's just staining? I've got black discolouration in a lot of the crevices of my teeth and I'm hoping it's just staining but I haven't been to the dentist for a while and I'm worried they might be cavities. What symptoms would you get with cavities apart from visible holes in your teeth? I know I should go to a dentist to get them looked at, but I'm not registered with a dentist and I can't find one on the NHS and can't afford to go private.

Stains or cavities???
You really do need to see a dentist - I had similar staining (as well as some frank cavities) due to avoiding the dentist for a long time, and in my case the "staining" actually turned out to be cavities in practically every tooth.......not that I want to scare you, but I think the longer you leave it, the more likely they are to turn into cavities. Apart from holes in your teeth, signs of cavities can include sensitivity, particularly to sweet things - you get this sharp severe pain in your tooth when you eat sweet things. Later on, you get more sensitive to cold and hot, but by that time the cavity is usually quite large. Get them seen to as soon as you can.
Reply:purchase a sonicare tooth brush they are expensive but really worth the money.
Reply:Do you have a LOT of silver amalgam fillings in your teeth? Silver amalgam can migrate as the amalgam deteriorates.

If you DO have a lot of them, try and get them replaced one at a time with white plastic fillings.

Other than that, it's a good idea to go to the dentist and find out WHY they are stained. SOONER is better.
Reply:It is really hard to tell the difference only a dentist could tell you for sure. Sometimes with cavities you can have sweet sensitivity, but that is not always you really don't want to wait until you start to have symptoms because that usually means the cavity has caused a lot of damage and you could end up needing more that just a simple filling.
