The dentist told me I have 5 cavities, but I brush twice a day and floss daily. Can this happen?

I haven't had any cavities since I was a child, and I'm 20 now. This is my first time seeing this dentist, and I still can't believe I have 5 cavities. I use listerine after every meal, I brush twice a day, and I floss every night. It just seems a little far-fetched to me, because I had gone to my regular dentist less than 6 months ago, and she said I had great hygiene and no cavities. I just want to know if this can really happen if I'm doing everything right.

Thanks!

watch what you eat.
Reply:He might be lying through his teeth, if you'll pardon the expression.

A friend of mine once related that many dentists are brutal and they're in it for the money. Also, you don't have fill every microscopic speck if you take great care of your teeth.
Reply:maybe you have a dental problem or something that weakens tooth strength
Reply:Be happy. I only have 5 teeth :-(
Reply:Get a second Opinion.
Reply:it sho nuff can girl!
Reply:Depends on your diet too. If your diet is healthy, try fluoride. :)
Reply:Depends on what you eat
Reply:I think the dentists are lying... this sounds so familiar to me.
Reply:yes it can i have known people who dont brush at all and have never had a cavitie, others brush all the time and get cavities on a regular basis, it has to do with the heredity in ur family
Reply:try going to other dentist maybe she just want ur money..
Reply:Maybe its either bacteria or its what you eat. Certain Foods can really damage your teeth even with brushing.

Gummy foods you should avoid.

Chocolate is rumored to good for your teeth
Reply:it is posible because you can have hereditarial weak teeth, no matter how much you brush. i advise using toothpaste that has baking soda and enamel building stuff in it, that stuff is specifically made for people with your problem
Reply:yes, some ppl are just born with a more acidic mouth, so its easier for them to get cavities

i think its like a genetic thing.
Reply:Sure it is totally possible. If your not to trusting of this dentist, go to another one for a second opinion. In fact, you own the x-rays and can just get them sent to another dentist and have them look at them.
Reply:It could be possible but if you are sure about yourself, check with another dentist as not all are ethical.
Reply:Does sound kind of weird if you were just there 6 months ago. Maybe go to another Dentist and don't say anything about the previous dentist. I worked for a dentist for 2 years and I am not an expert...but it does sound weird. Especially if you have been taking care of your teeth the same. I would get them checked again. GOOD LUCK:)
Reply:ya it is possible...sry!

some people have thinner teeth...it may b in your history
Reply:yes some people are proned to having teeth problems

i brush twice a day

and have spent almost $20000 in my mouth since i was 18 im 28 now

good luck
Reply:I have five cavities, trust me. I thought i would not have any because a brush and floss everyday, but it might be the food you eat. If you are a big soda drinker cut down on soda's and switch to water, or low surger drinks. Don't eat alot of junk food every week. Hope this helps!!
Reply:Some of it might be heredity, your enamel wears down at a certain age, but 5 cavities in 6 months sounds nearly impossible, heredity or not, have you changed your eating habits?
Reply:you probbaluy are eating a lot of sugar, or are not using a good enough toothbrush. its is possible.
Reply:This happened to me as well. There are two possibilities - either the first dentist doesn't know what she was doing, or the second dentist is trying to rip you off. Maybe get a third opinion to help you decide which is the case.
Reply:sure it can.... maybe one day u ate smth rotten and even though u cleaned ur teeth maybe it somehow stayed in there a lil bit and gave u cavities... could also be that ur last dentist wasn't very good

my teeth are totally whack cuz i brush once a day and floss like once a week and dont have cavities! =DD
Reply:(a) get a second opinion (b)are you taking any medication that might be causing problems,(c) get a total physical checkup . none of these cost much and dont take much time but definitely get second opinion
Reply:It is possible to develop cavities despite meticulous oral hygiene. Your toothbrush cannot reach in between your teeth (interproximal spaces) and it is an excellent location to develop what we call class 2 and class 3 lesions. Also, different dentists have different ideas as to when to treat a cavity. Some drill and fill the little lesions and others might adopt a wait and see approach. You can politely ask the dentist to show you on the x-rays where the cavities are so you can take care of your teeth better rather than accusing them of trying to rip you off like some people are suggesting.
Reply:You may have already had some small weak areas that had not made cavities yet, they may now have had a chance to turn into a cavity. It only takes 1 time of a little too much sugar, carbs, whatever to make enough acid to make a cavity. The usual culprit is too much snacking. If you snack too much between meals, it can make too much acid and the pH of your mouth never levels out. Try to avoid snacking between meals. Chewing a sugar free gum between meals can help neutrilize acid. Remember, even juices such as orange juice or milk still makes acid and cavities.
Reply:Get a second opinion!!!
