I have two cavities!!!?

All right dudes..i just went to the dentist and the damn bastard found two cavities. The cavities are located in the far back the last teeths. My question is how long can i wait until i have to get them filled? I dont want to go to have to go through the pain rite now..im not ready.The cavity is not too big probly takes up 1/8 of my tooth. Ive had other cavities filled when i was a kid but that was like almost 5 years ago.Im so scared now..tell me it will be ok. Im most afraid of the shot they give you to numb the pain.. im so scared

My dear clied: I am no spring chicken and I have been


terrified of dentists all my life! I don't know why. I guess when


I was small the terror just took hold and I can't get rid of it.


I am at an age now where my teeth are going bad, so they


have to come out one by one. I have no guts to get them all


out at one time and get dentures. But I will tell you how I have


"managed" to get as much done as I have.


My doctor told me I could NOT get stressed because my


blood pressure was going up. When I go to the dentist's \, it


goes thru the roof, and they sometimes cancel my appt.


I went back to my doctor and told him the problem and he


prescribed Xanax which is a relaxant. I have a low dose


and it is just enough to get me thru the dental procedure.





I now have a tooth that is 1/2 decayed and I've put it off for


6 months. I talked to the nurse in their office and she said


I can get it done with NO SHOT! Like WOW man, I'm for


that. How? You breath this wonderful gas that makes you


happy and calm and its all over before you know it happened. Of course, it costs a little more, but man its worth


it . I'll hock my sox to do it the EASY way. Problem: I may


like that gas a lot.
Reply:Go to your local drug store and there is a product that is like a temporary filling. Ask the pharmacist to help you find it. I used it before and it helps for a while anyways. Good Luck!
Reply:Get it taken care of now. The longer you wait the worse it will get. If you wait till it abscesses, you could get blood poisoning. If you are really that afraid, talk to your dentist. He can give you some Valium or nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Be brave!!
Reply:It depends on how many surfaces are involved in the decayed area. If it is just one surface then you may be able to find a dentist that does micro etch fillings. They do not require you to be numb. If there are more than one surface then you may have to get a shot. Shots don't have to be painful, a good dentist can do them with little pain. Don't wait too long as the decay will only grow and the larger the decayed area, the larger the filling. If left untreated then it can go into the nerve and cause you to have to have a root canal. Good luck and get more info about the size of the decay.
Reply:The dentist can give you a topical medication to numb the area before you get the shot if you ask. With Novocaine, getting cavities filled hardly feels like anything. If you wait too long, the nerve could get damaged and you'll need a root canal. That can be painful. My advice would be to get the cavity taken care of as soon as you can. It won't be that bad, and waiting will only make it worse.
Reply:Ok, no BS here. Don't put off going to see the "damn bastard" so he can fix it before it gets all kinds of out of control! Getting the cavities taken care of now while they are little, is simple and painless. If you wait too long while your trying to get up the courage, they are going to get bigger, and may even need a more difficult procedure to restore them. You know, like a root canal. So your nervous, just ask them for N20 to relax you. Bring in your head phones and some music to listen to. They will let you get to a really nice place before they even put the topical on you. Most of my patients never even remember getting the injection. You probably had larger cavities when you were 5 that were restored. More than likely these are small if you haven’t felt them, or had any sensitivity to cold or air. I've had some patients that didn't need anesthesia for the procedure. There really is no need to be numbed if the decay doesn’t go into the dentin. The Dentist can usually judge the size of the cavity from the x ray, and he can always tell how deep he is when he's drilling and stop to numb you, if you decide that you may want to try it without anesthesia to avoid the injection. Some decay can be caught before it gets too deep. Yours may be that way, I don't know. Either way, injection or not, get the N20 and remember to always breath through the nose piece. You’ll lose the effects if you mouth breath. Don’t sit and dwell on it for too long, they are only going to get bigger the longer you wait. I know you’ll do fine! Oh mountain gal, that nurse is a dental assistant and she is full of you know what if she thinks you can have a tooth with 50% loss due to decay filled without any anesthesia. I'm sorry, but no way! That tooth is probably already sensitive to just air and drinks I'll bet. That is an indication that you have to be numb, the drill blows air and water when he's cleaning out the decay, if your sensitive you wouldn't be able to stand it. Don't want either one of you thinking the wrong way here. I know about this believe, been in dentistry too long. MG, you probably have too much decay but Clied probably will be fine with it.
Reply:Get them taken care of now. If not they will continue to get bigger. Its doesn't hurt. Tell the dentist you want nitrous oxide gas. He will fire it up and you will be so out of it you won't feel a thing. The two back teeth are important. In the event you should ever need future bridge work.
Reply:My suggestion is to find a dentist that will sedate you. xanax and nitrous oxide works well together or IV sedation.





Then you won't care about the visit. you will be out of it. just have someone drive you there and back.





Don't wait to have them filled, it sounds like simple fillings as of now.





Waiting only lets the decay become closer to the nerve of the tooth. Ending in a certain root canal or removal of the tooth if not tended to.





you don't want to lose your main chewing teeth, especially it sounds like you are still young.





as far as pain... Topical gel is placed on your gums before the shots. it is kinda like oral gel but stronger, so you don't really fell the shot. it will be over in a matter of seconds.





trust me try the laughing gas it works well.
Reply:We put topical on to numb the are a first so you don't feel the shot. I wouldn't wait too long because every person's mouth is different, example we saw a lady and in 1week hers turned into a root canal- fast progression- and on the flip side we have seen them were they had it for a month. Bottom line you don't know witch one you are so don't take that chance! The dentist will do a little and check with you and if you feel something let him know he can add more. There's two drills- high speed and slow speed- I personally hate the slow speed because it feels like a grinder. There is also hand instruments your dentist can use if you just can't get numb- small spoon excavator or large spoon excavator- Good Luck! Don't wait.
