Can pregnancy create cavities?

I am 26 years old and have never had any cavities until now. I just had my first dental check-up after my pregnancy and I have a few. Some people have told me that it could be because you lose bone density when you are pregnant. Has anyone ever heard that before?

Can pregnancy create cavities?
it's a complete myth that pregnancy takes calcium from your teeth. that is the last place the baby would pull calcium from or you would see the effects b/c your teeth are so strong. the reason you are getting cavities is b/c of the increase in hormones increase the plaque build up. your dentist should have told you this. it is especially important to floss when you are pregnant b/c of this extra plaque.
Reply:Directly, probably not. However, if you have a cavity, most dentists will not treat them until after your child is born.

Good luck!
Reply:Yes, your nutrients are being diverted to your baby and not your body anymore. it sucks, but well worth it.
Reply:I've heard that pregnancy takes so much nutrition from the body that teeth can be affected. I think it darkens them sometimes. Don't know about cavaties.

If you eat right, it shouldn't happen.
Reply:I don't know if this has any thing to do with your situation but thought out this whole pregnancy I have the worst teeth ache and I have never had any trouble with my teeth before pregnancy.
Reply:well, i imagine, from lack of calcium to the mother, my friend, after she had her baby boy, she went to the dentist and found out she had seven cavities,..and i have never known her to have any before..
Reply:Yes pregnancy can cause cavities! You have to eat foods that have calcium or take supplements like Caltrate. The baby sucks calcium and other nutrients and minerals from your body, that's why you have to take prenatal vitamins to keep this from happening.A freind of mine when she was pregnant her babies got so many nutrients from her body and they sucked all of the calcium from her teeth they were all brown and cavity filled she had to get them all pulled and get dentures! NO KIDDING!!!So please start taking extra calcium for you and baby !Adding fish oil and vitaminE%26amp;C won't hurt either! Good luck!
Reply:Funny you should mention that. My first daughter is now 6 months old, and I just noticed about a few tiny cavities forming near my gun line, and I've never had serious problems with my teeth decaying like this at all.

I just chalked it up to not noticing that I'm no longer left with enough time pay attention to my teeth properly, or that I'm too tired to remember to do it regularly.

From what I read about, pregnany can cause your teeth to loosen, from gums swelling and bone loss in the jaw, but it shouldn't effect your teeth.
Reply:Actually, not just cavities. Ive seen a lot of mothers losing their teeth so easily. They would tell me that its because of the very small calcium intake. That they actually need more specially when they are pregnant. So some would drink calcium-rich milk for herself and the baby and take calcium capsules at the same time when its not enough.

Check out the required dietary allowance and consult your health provider regarding this matter.
Reply:Not really, however when you are pregnant the baby does take away some of your nutrients. Therefor making you more likely to get a cavity.
Reply:Yes, all sorts of dental problems could happen during pregnancy..its the whole changes in your body/ hormonal thing.....Go get a book called " what to expect when you are expecting" by Heidi Murkoff. It's the pregnancy bible and will help with all these questions. Your question as well as many others that you would not expect is in there. It's excellent in describing all of these little things that worry moms and help distinguish when something is "normal" or not.

Good Luck!
Reply:yeah its possible. and i also heard of someone getting holes in their teeth during pregnancy because their calcium levels weren't high enough and when your pregnant the baby takes alot of calcium from you. the doctors will give you calcium pills. another way how to tell if you don't have a lot of calcium is that you will experience alot of leg cramps in the back of your legs.
Reply:yes your baby is taking all o your nutrients and vitamins from every part of your body, including your teeth. The dentist will tell you to make sure you keep your teeth as clean as posible while you are preganant.
Reply:I don't know what the whole story is, but when I was at the dentist last month I told the hygeinist that I was planning on getting pregnant next year. She lauched into a whole lecture about how it was doubly important to floss daily because of "pregnancy gingivitis." She didn't say anything about cavities, though.
Reply:Yes, this happened to me. I never had a cavity in my whole life until after my 2nd pregnancy when I was 22. Dentist said it could be due to throwing up from morning sickness the acid in the throw up breaks down tooth enamel making them more susceptible to cavities. But I've also heard of the bone density thing too. My Grandma has had dentures since she first started having kids because of this. Now after having cavities I understand why people hate going to the dentist, and I never understood before!
Reply:Two kids later, and I'm firmly convinced that I have more filling material in my mouth than actual teeth!!

Yes, pregnancy can cause all sorts of screwey stuff--even tooth problems. My dentist told me it had something to do with a pregnant woman's saliva.

All I can say is, Thank God for the white fillings! LOL
