Could you please tell me what causes cavities, if you don't eat candy. Could improper brushing cause cavities

My niece may have some cavities , but she doesn't eat candy a lot.

Could you please tell me what causes cavities, if you don't eat candy. Could improper brushing cause cavities
Streptococcus mutans is the leading cause of dental caries (tooth decay) worldwide. Streptococcus mutans, sticks to the surface of teeth and subsists on a diverse group of carbohydrates. While metabolising sugar and other energy sources, the microbe produces acid that causes cavities in teeth.

Since nearly everything you eat has sugars/carbs it could be poor brushing habits. I personally brush after every meal, don't forget to floss. Flossing is often overlooked and bacteria can hide in between teeth!
Reply:Bacteria and mostly sugar cause cavities. There is natural types of sugar in almost everything so it's not just candy. Also, little kids should never use a toothbrush that an adult has used as they don't have the natural bacteria that we do while they're young and using other's toothbrushes could pass along this cavity causing bacteria to them. That's what my dentist explained to me anyways.
Reply:~You have to realize that foods are metabolized into sugar... also, a huge cause of cavities in these times is pop (you not only have the sugar, but all the acid)...

Poor brushing habits can definitely contribute and cause cavities...

Think of it this way... there are bacteria in your mouth, and they eat the same things we do... then, they produce acid as a byproduct... the acid will "eat away" at your teeth...

The plaque, whitish stuff, that develops on teeth is basically a big bacteria party... when we brush, we are brushing away, or disturbing, the bacteria.

I hope I helped...
Reply:cavity causing bacteria+plaque+sugar(for fuel)=cavities. this is the cavity causing combo. all three need to be present to cause cavities. everybody has cavity causing bacteria, but in different amounts. everybody misses somewhere when brushing and this gives the plaque. and there are all sorts of natural sugars, or foods converted to sugars that act as a fuel for the bacteria and tada...cavity.
