Does chewing on drinking straws cause cavities?

Someone told me that this was the number one cause of cavities. More than any candy or sweets.

Does chewing on drinking straws cause cavities?
No, it doesn't cause cavities... but chewing on straws, ice, gum, etc. all the time could lead to future TMJ problems.
Reply:The number one cause of cavities is people that forget to brush and floss.
Reply:Cavities happen when the acid from the bactira in your mouth eats away at the enamle on your teeth. So No.. chewing straws does not cause cavities.
Reply:heck no i chew on them all the time. its fun. keep on chewin' my bortha.
Reply:yeah if they are full of sugar-ie. pixie sticks
Reply:how could you get a cavity from something that has no sugar? it will probably wear down the enamel and you'll probably get some kinda plastic poison from the straw but ultimately i think you are safe from cavities.
Reply:Many factors contribute to the formation of dental caries, including the types of food consumed, the length of time foods are retained in the mouth, the level of oral hygiene and access to professional dental care.

Sticky foods like granola bars and cookies that tend to stay in the mouth longer and/or cling to teeth can be a significant source of dental cavities. So can liquids that contain sugar, such as soft drinks and sports drinks.

People who suck on hard candy or drink soda all day long are more prone to dental caries. The acid in the sugar stays on the teeth all day attacking the enamal layer.

Hope this helps.
