My son has cavities!!?

I feel like such a bad mom. He went to the dentist tonight for his regular check up, and has 5 cavities. I almost cried, I am 28 and never had one! He brushes twice a day, I supervise. He is 5. The dentist said no more fruit snacks, etc, but does anyone else have anymore tips? His vitamin has flouride in it but we have well water so it's not flouridated. Help!?

My son has cavities!!?
Do not feel bad..I'm a few years older than you and my daughter is about the same age as your son.. I too brush my daughters teeth with her all the time and she really doesn't eat much junk.. But she to had 6 cavities..She went for her first check up at 3 and a half, except my dentist gave me a different answer. My daughter has always drank spring water because we lived with my mom for a year and she is very health conscious.. So she would only allow my daughter to have spring water..I know that children under 1 year of age are not supposed to have fluoride..But children 1 and over are in need of it..It helps protect their teeth.. If they do not get it, they can not fight off the cavities.. I was told that my daughter had 6 cavities because she didn't have any Fluoride.. In fact my dentist told me that with spring water and bottled water being so popular that this was very common in a lot of the younger children he was seeing.. People had heard children under 1 were not supposed to have it and then when the children got to be toddlers the parents only remembered fluoride for children is bad.. I got my daughter's cavities fixed and have been giving her water with fluoride..The last 2 dentist appointments have been cavity free..And some spring water now comes with fluoride.. Just check the label.
Reply:talk to dentist about getting more flouride into him.
Reply:well its not just sugar...like some ppl dont brush there teeth properly..and get a better toothpaste...stop drinking so much sugar..and some ppl are just born with thinner types of teeth..so it makes them more prone to teeth issues..especially later in life.
Reply:its bad teeth..my brother is 7 and he has 6 cavities..a spacer..and has had teeth pulled out..no one in our family has had teeth like that before but he did!! and he brushed too!
Reply:he needs to brush more than twice a day. Mine brushes 4 times a day!

Also, he uses a children's mouthwash, Agent Blue. And children's flossers.

Don't just supervise. Let him brush 1/2 the time, then YOU brush his teeth the other 1/2.
Reply:use floridated toothpaste (they do not taste bad) maybe you should help him brush like every other night or so. Or you could check his teeth every night. and something else that would definetely help is if you flossed him in addition to all this. You need to get Agent Blue mouth wash it shows you where the plaque is so they can brush it out.

I know your pain sorry.
Reply:everyone is different, i have never had a cavity before and my brother has like 1 everytime he goes to the dentist we both brush are teeth eveyday for some reason were both in the bathroom at the same time brushin, we brush with the same type of tooth paste, it all deprends on your saliva.
Reply:some people are just more prone to cavities. try using act mouthwash
Reply:If he can rinse with a mouth was buy him the ACT for kids and have him rinse with it twice a day for added fluoride. Make sure he doesn't sip on sweets (juice or milk) for long periods of times. Everytime we eat something sweet we cause the pH in our mouth to turn acidic which in turns attacks the enamel on our teeth. It takes 30 minutes for our mouths to neutralize after each "acid attack". So don't let sweet meals, snacks or drinks linger. Sweets that are sticky in nature are the worst such as fruit snacks, candy, and even raisins. They stick for longer periods of time in the the groves of the surfaces of your teeth. Invest in getting him a powered toothbrush and make sure he is brushing for at least 2 minutes each time and all surfaces of his teeth. Hope this helps!!!
Reply:i had 5 at one to when i was 6 some people just have a bigger problem not getting cavities not your fault just is teeth/body
Reply:does his dad have lots of cavities? that kind of problem can be hereditary. beyond that, if he's 5 you can get him those little "flosser" things that kids can use themselves, use toothpaste with flouride (maybe even get him an electric toothbrush ... they work better and they're fun), lay off the sugary snacks/ sodas/ juice (and if he does have some once in a while, have him brush his teeth afterwards) and don't give him anything but water before bed after he's brushed his teeth. and ask the doctor if the vitamin gives him enough flouride. some brands of bottled water have it, too.
Reply:Don't feel bad. My son got cavities easily when he was young. The dentist said he had deep crevices in his teeth and the brush bristles couldn't go in as deep as the crevices.

He should brush after eating anything sticky. Not only does that mean after candy or sugary things, but also: raisins, white bread, pasta, any simple carbohydrate will stick to his teeth and turn to sugar, feeding the bacteria that cause cavities.

I also recently read that cheese was a good anti-cavity food.
Reply:My 7 year old son has 7 cavities and we are going to get them worked on tomorrow. I also supervised most of the time while he brushed, but he wasn't brushing hard enough. Also, does he drink pop or juice alot? My kids do and don't hardly drink any milk and that had to change. I am now helping him brush his teeth and have incorporated more milk and water in his diet. And also, after he has the fillings put in, they are putting sealant on his teeth too.
Reply:My little grandson has 10 and will have to be hospitalized for the dentist to fill them all. Looks like the convenience of sippy cups and sticky gummy snacks is going to do a job on a whole generation of kids. Used to be when a kid was thirsty that we gave them water, now it is juice, juice, juice.
Reply:I wouldn't recommend brushing more than twice a day, it will wear his enamel off.

Talk to the dentist or pediatrician about fluoride drops.... it does wonders especially when you don't have fluoride in your water.
Reply:dont use an act rinse-thats bad advice-its too concentrated in case he swallows too many times. dont beat urself up. if this is ur worst problem enjoy and just do ur best
Reply:Help him brush ,there are some tablets that kids can take after brushing and if they did not brush good it will show, ask your dentist about it.That may help too .Good Luck and keep a eye on them teeth.
Reply:I am not sure if someone else or your doc said this but...I was told to put a small rice sized amount of toothpaste on tongue of child 3-5 times a day to help prevent cavities. Also NO juice!!!! Milk or water only...(except for special occasions or at friends houses, etc) Juice is the most sugary thing you can give to a kid, it has like double that of fruit snacks! Good luck!
