Should I get my child's cavities filled at 6 yrs old? or wait?

my child has 2 cavities the dentist said to be filled, they are baby molars. Can I wait for them to fall out (how long can that take?) my child couldn't get throught the exam. Crying. So, I don't think a shot in the mouth is worth it. But I also want to take good care of teeth and good hygiene. Has anyone been through this? What did they do?

Should I get my child's cavities filled at 6 yrs old? or wait?
get a second opinion from a dentist - trust me.
Reply:The teeth need to be kept in good shape for the permanent teeth to grow in without cativities .
Reply:when did your child's other baby teeth fall out? or have ANY of them fallen out yet?

if they were quite a while ago, you should maybe just leave it and wait for them to fall out

if none have fallen out yet, you should get them filled

another option is to have the teeth removed, i had this done when i was about 5 or 6, they will use an anaesthetic or at least numb your child's gum with an injection. it should be painless, so nothing to worry about
Reply:You should definitely have them taken care of. The cavities will get worse and then she will be in pain. If she loses the teeth before she is supposed to that causes a spacing issue for the permanent teeth to come in. Try taking her to a pediatric dentist .(if the one you saw wasn't) They know how to handle the little ones. If the cavities are pretty small, they may not have to give her an anesthetic. (Check with the dentist) Ask about nitrous oxide to help her relax.
Reply:the problem is that the cavities can get worse and affect the permanent teeth. there are some options but it depends on the severity of the cavities etc. talk to your dentist, if he/she feels its still necessary they can send your child to a dentist who specializes in children's dentistry which might make it easier. the reality is that there is no reliable way to tell how long it will take for them to fall out. your dentist can check the xrays and see if the root of the 'baby teeth' is resorbed and sometimes you can tell about how long but its not exact. plus your child needs those baby teeth in place to keep the place for the permanent ones coming up behind them.
Reply:The cavities can spread from the baby teeth to the permanent teeth. The molars may not fall out for two more years, so yes they'll need to be filled.
Reply:I say wait and let your child's teeth rot out. I am sure that the dentist just wants to take your money! It is much more important that your child never cry or ever have any emotional distress!
Reply:Yes, you should get them filled. Premolars should last until age approx.10-13. If they decay and fall (or are taken out) early they can cause problems later on. They kind of act as space maintainers. If you don't think your regular dentist can handle your child (or vice-versa) consider a pediadontist (a children's dentist). They are well versed in how to make you child comfortable.
Reply:Definitely have them filled. Even you believe they will fall out soon, it's important to keep them in good shape. You really can't predict an exact age when the baby teeth will fall out anyway. The teeth could start to rot out from inside the cavity and end up causing her pain.
Reply:Hey don't wait. Have the molars filled but go to a dentist who treats a lot of kids. I had my molars filled when I was that young. It was either that or put up with killer-pain.
Reply:happy gas worked for my kids. its nitros oxide and puts you into another world. great stuff. id get them filled because it could be a while before they fall out and could cause problems with the other teeth
Reply:My Son had 2 and he very gun shy of the dentist and I said no they will fall out.Since they are his baby teeth I say leave them alone, they should come out within 4 yrs.Just make sure he brushed his teeth and they even have kids mouth wash .
Reply:Do not NEGLECT the cavities in your child's mouth. He needs to have them filled! If he doesn't, he could develop an abscess, which is more threatening and painful than a cavity. Also, primary teeth preserve a space for his permanent teeth, so you want them to be as healthy as possible. Another reason to have them filled is they could easily become deeper and more painful, your child may not want to eat and become malnourished as a result.

Children usually don't loose their molars until ages 10-12.
Reply:My 6 year old has 2 fillings now and I am happy he has them. I don't have to worry about toothaches. The dentist made him very comfortable, he had a couple of visits before he had it actually done, where the dentist let him touch the instruments and be comfortable sitting on the chair. Anyhow, he didn't cry when the second filling was put on. Good luck.
